Data pick of the day: 12% global mobile audience uses Viber

Highlights of 2014 have been big acquisitions in the internet world, with Facebook snapping up WhatsApp, Amazon shelling out for Twitch and Microsoft adding Minecraft-creators Mojang to its portfolio. Just before the USD 19 billion buyout of WhatsApp, Rakuten had acquired Viber for USD 900 million.

In mid 2014, Viber is yet to pick up with peers such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Skype by several percentage points. Its 12 per cent market share in not striking, but its engagement rates in particular markets can reach a higher number.

As per data from Global Web Index, in the Philippines market, Viber has 40 per cent of the mobile audience using its services every month. Shortly behind, over third of the market size in countries such as Ireland and the UAE is engaged with the mobile messaging service.

Its top 10 market are attributes as fast growing nation with internet population also gaining rapidly on-year. Under such a scenario, Viber is certainly one to watch out for.
