Marketers Beware Facebook Losing Steam with Teens 300x153 Marketers Beware: Facebook Losing Steam with TeensHave America’s teenagers begun losing interest in Facebook?

A new report says the answer is in the affirmative, and marketers may want to take note. A freshly published Pew survey indicates that the social network of one billion is becoming too much of a headache for some teens to handle.

Why so? Because their moms, dads, grandparents, neighbors, teachers, and extended family are all there on Facebook too.

Teens are increasingly turned off to Facebook for this reason. They also complain about their friends’ over-sharing and about too much ‘drama’ on the site.

As a result, they are increasingly flocking to other social platforms, such as Twitter.

These are some of the findings of a new Pew Research Center survey of U.S. teens’ social media use. Released Tuesday, the survey finds that teens are sharing more personal information on social media, but are also taking a variety of steps to manage their privacy online.

“The stress of needing to manage their reputation on Facebook also contributes to the lack of enthusiasm,” the survey said, noting that 24% of online teens now use Twitter, which is up from 16% in 2011.

“Those teens who used sites like Twitter and Instagram reported feeling like they could better express themselves on these platforms, where they felt freed from the social expectations and constraints of Facebook,” Pew reports.

“Nevertheless, the site is still where a large amount of socializing takes place, and teens feel they need to stay on Facebook in order to not miss out.”

Although Twitter is rapidly gaining steam, Facebook is still the most popular social network among U.S. teens… for now.

Biz Stones New Business Drawing Big Name Investors 300x205 Biz Stones New Business Drawing Big Name InvestorsFor weeks now we’ve heard rumblings about the mysterious new business venture undertaken by Twitter co-founder Biz Stone.

Simply known as Jelly, no one really knows what Stone’s new venture is all about. There are guesses, but only that – guesses.

What isn’t a guess, however, is whether Stone will launch his new startup with serious cash in reserve.

According to published reports late Thursday, Stone has already attracted an august crowd of financial backers.

“We chose angels like Al Gore, a Partner at KPCB and Chairman and Co-founder of Generation Investment Management, Greg Yaitanes, a Hollywood director, and Roya Mahboob, an entrepreneur doing amazing work for women in Afghanistan partly because they work in divergent fields. Knowledge diversity is something we prize highly and is also something that will be represented in our product,” an announcement from Stone reads.

For now, Jelly isn’t saying how much money it raised in this round.

“As mobile devices have taken an increasingly central role in our lives, humanity has grown more connected than ever–herein lies massive opportunity,” the post continued. “With this capital raise, Jelly has the means to hire more great talent and continue building what we think of as the natural next step for our connected society. We will share more about Jelly from a product perspective when we move beyond early prototyping.”

What do you think Jelly is all about?

Twitter Gets Lucky in Latest Acquisition 300x170 Twitter Gets Lucky in Latest AcquisitionTwitter’s latest acquisition is Lucky Sort, a Portland, Oregon-based startup recognized for its work on TopicWatch, an impressive visualization and navigation engine.

Financial terms of the deal weren’t made available Monday, but Lucky Sort has raised $600,000 to date.

Although Twitter has played this one close to the chest, Lucky Sort confirmed the acquisition on its website today.

“Two years ago I started Lucky Sort with several friends,” says Noah Pepper, Chief Executive Officer. “Our goal was to make huge document sets easier to analyze, summarize and visualize by building elegant and user friendly tools for text analysis.”

“Several of us will be moving to San Francisco to join Twitter’s revenue engineering department, so if you’re in the neighborhood and want to talk about text mining or data visualization give us a shout,” the message added. “We’ll be helping current customers transition off our system in the coming months such that we can focus fully on our future at Twitter.”

Now imagine that these new age providers are actually able to compete for the rights to quality content and earn their revenue through an advertising opt-out offer similar to what we see with Spotify’s Premium Membership service.

At present, this model has proven problematic for services like Netflix as they attempt to financially justify expensive ventures of original content.

But for the sake of argument, let’s assume that the financial and technical infrastructure needed to turn a profit is actually in place. Who holds the power here? Whose influence grows as TV’s traditional model crumbles

Power to the people

In a word – the people. Socialization of media is already a common phenomenon, and we’ll certainly see this trend continue to change how we identify what’s “popular” as control over how TV is consumed shifts towards users and away from producers.

Imagine for a moment that CBS can’t prime a new sitcom for success by giving it a favorable time slot. What once survived because it was a lead-in for their big ratings program now must stand on its own.

The networks’ influence over what we watch was once wielded through their control of the flow of content, but now that control is solely in the hands of the viewer. We decide the what, where, when, and how of our televised entertainment.

Want to see an interesting parallel of my hypothesis playing out in the present day? Just take a look at the music industry. When was the last time MTV was responsible for introducing you to the coolest new band? Ten years ago?

Now socialized music platforms like Spotify’s “Follow” feature and the new Twitter Music program allow people to discover new acts through digital word-of-mouth. Whether the influence comes from a well-established music blog like Pitchfork or a friend from college who always knows the best bands before they get big, the user decides who has earned the right to recommend content.

The arbiter of cool is you

It’s not an alien concept, really. People have always learned about future favorites from their friends, but that process becomes all the more poignant when replicated in the digital world. When trusted endorsements come at the exact moment of consumption in an on-demand environment, that’s when power truly shifts towards the individual.

The future of television will be similarly dynamic. Simultaneously critic and consumer, users will completely control the manner in which their viewing habits are influenced. They will, in fact, be influencers themselves as well.

Once a prix fixed menu carefully crafted by the head chefs of major studios, TV will one day seem more like an all-you-can-eat buffet. The patrons will control the service. Not the other way around.

Predicting the future is, more often than not, a pointless endeavor that rarely ends in accuracy. Orwell’s vision of 1984 was as cold and cruel as the book was popular. And even though my imagined evolution of television may prove as equally incorrect as Orwell’s best seller, at least it’s optimistic.
