They are working together for the creation and development of a survey app for Oxfam’s field workers that will allow them to conduct surveys, analyze and share data electronically.

Press Release: 10/04/14

Golden Gekko University is a three month program launched by Golden Gekko where recent graduates work on the creation, definition, development, delivery and launch of two mobile application projects for non-profit organizations. The projects are done pro-bono in support of ideas that have the potential of creating long-term value for society.

The app, called Columba, will launch on Android phones and will be distributed by Oxfam to their workers in Burkina Faso and South Sudan, as part of a pilot program.

Today, Oxfam collaborators conduct surveys in the field in order to better assess the needs of the population and measure the impact of their projects and disaster relief programs. These surveys are currently conducted on paper and manually entered into spreadsheets, which are uploaded depending on limited Internet availability. Through this app, Oxfam Intermón will improve efficiency in terms of time and costs, while maintaining transparency with their partners and supporters.

Maria Victoria Morón, Business Developer at Golden Gekko University, said: “One of the most rewarding parts of this project is being able to provide a tool that will drastically change how information travels. By incorporating this mobile solution, Oxfam will be able to greatly enhance the impact of their projects, allowing them to help even more people around the world.”

Features such as uploading photos and recording geo-location will be incorporated in Columba, which will be available in three languages: English, French and Spanish. The application will also function offline and be able to store information that will upload automatically once an Internet connection is available.

Around the globe, Oxfam works to find practical, innovative ways for people to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive. Among the issues they work on are: natural resources, emergency response, gender equality, human rights and education.

Joel Pinckheard, International IT Manager at Oxfam Intermón, said: “The proposal from Golden Gekko came at just the right time. It has been a pleasure working with them on this project which we expect will allow us to increase our ability to effect change by gathering and acting information even faster.”

Golden Gekko is one of the leading mobile app solution providers in the world, with more than 1,500 mobile apps and sites delivered since 2005. Using the latest technology, user interface design and development methodologies, they focus on the delivery of mobile apps and mobile websites for a wide range of industries.
