The rumor mill, which hasn’t been kind to Steve Jobs’ successor this year, suggests that Apple’s board is continuing to apply pressure on Cook to innovate at a more aggressive pace as investors nervously await something shiny and new from Apple.

The latest rumor in question comes from the author of a controversial new book MMW first covered earlier this week.

Ian Fineman, author of Tim Cook: The Core of Apple’s Problem, suggests that Eddy Cue, one of Apple’s senior vice presidents, is the “logical replacement” of Cook should the board choose to dump Cook.

“If Steve Jobs were still alive,” the author writes, “he would be embarrassed by Apple today.”

It should be noted, however, that there is no indication that Apple’s Board of Directors of considering an imminent removal of Tim Cook. For now, any suggestion to the contrary should be taken as pure speculation resulting from apparent frustration born of the “innovation slowdown” perceived to be underway at Apple.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Cue’s name has been mentioned when discussing new CEOs. According to Business Insider, during its hunt for a new CEO last year, the Yahoo board briefly considered hiring Cue before deciding on Marissa Mayer.
